With appointments piling up these days from viewing autumn foliage to visiting fall exhibitions, I find myself reaching for a beige knit sweater first whenever I open my closet. Some people even express regret when looking at photos, noting that they wore a similar color last year.

This time, how about changing the colors a bit, like rose pink with charcoal pants or soft blue with ivory pants? There is no reason to avoid bright colors just because you are in your 50s. However, rather than blindly choosing vibrant colors, it is important to find a combination that suits your complexion and your usual wardrobe.

Autumn exhibition outfit featuring a rose pink knit and charcoal pants

You might find yourself putting on and taking off a beige knit sweater in front of the mirror before heading to an exhibition. It’s quite plausible, isn’t it? There are days when your clothes are perfectly fine, but you just want to go out with a slightly different vibe.

A rose pink knit is a good choice for that. It is a soft color with a slight gray tint rather than a bright pink, so it goes well with charcoal pants.

Choose a knit top that slightly covers the hips and features shoulder lines that aren't too droopy. Pairing it with charcoal straight pants creates a soft look on the upper body and a neat finish on the bottom, so you won't feel out of place even if the evening appointment follows the exhibition.

If pink feels too overwhelming, you can go with dark brown for the bag and shoes. But wait a moment before you are about to match the bag in pink as well. The pink has already been incorporated beautifully enough.

A bright weekend outfit with a soft blue knit and ivory pants

A soft blue knit sweater paired with ivory pants looks lovely on days when you have lunch with friends. It feels fresher than beige and softer than a pure white top.

You need to choose the shade carefully, especially with light blue. Even with the same shade of blue, if the gray undertone is too strong, it can make your face look pale. Don't just look at it under store lighting; if possible, check it in natural light as well.

For the bottoms, I chose ivory straight-leg pants that weren't too wide. If I just tucked the front of the knit sweater in slightly, it revealed my waistline and made my legs look longer. Ah, but whenever I went out wearing those ivory pants, someone always suggested we eat something with red broth. My outfit was fresh and clean, but I suddenly found myself being very thoughtful when it came to the menu.

Sage green knit and cream skirt for a fall foliage cafe outing

It is easy to think of green knits as only dark green, but there is also sage green. It is a light green with a slight gray tint, so it pairs naturally with brown or beige outerwear.

Here, I’ll pair a cream A-line midi skirt instead of dark blue denim. It creates a slightly softer vibe when visiting an arboretum with autumn foliage or a suburban cafe.

In particular, if the knit is too long, it may bunch up at the waist of the skirt. A length that ends near the hips or a design where the front can be tucked in slightly is best. For shoes, something like low-heeled brown ankle boots would be good. You might think we were just going to a cafe but then be asked to walk on a nearby trail, so let high-heeled boots rest for a while.

This combination is also great for those who usually own a lot of beige clothes. You just need to keep the cream skirt or brown jacket as is and change the color of the knit.

For a lavender knit outfit, choose a navy skirt and neckline.

Lavender is a pretty color, but it’s hard to reach for it right away. If so, try starting with a low-saturation lavender shade. When paired with a deep navy midi skirt, the combination of soft and calm tones makes it perfect for autumn gatherings. In particular, if you are concerned about your neck looking stuffy, try choosing a round neck with a slightly looser fit or a shallow V-neck.

I would like a skirt with a neat length that falls below the knee, and a knit top that isn't too tight. Adding just a few small earrings would be enough.

If it is a day to meet people you haven't seen in a while, like at an alumni gathering, I would recommend this combination first out of the four. It allows you to change the atmosphere with color without feeling too forced.

If a beige knit suits you well, it is fine to keep wearing it. However, you don't have to choose that color every time. The next time you go knitting, try holding rose pink and soft blue against your face first. If you find yourself putting beige aside in front of the mirror and taking another look at other colors, wouldn't that be a pretty nice change in itself?
