I took out the mini bag I’m going to take to a wedding in October and put my phone, card wallet, and power bank in it, but the wedding gift envelope didn't fit... I can't fold the envelope to put it in, and I don't want to carry it around in my hand all day either.

This time, rather than checking if the bag looked small, I first checked to see if the actual congratulatory money envelopes I was going to bring would fit inside.

I changed the size so that it wasn't uncomfortable to wear over a jacket and could be carried to a cafe after the ceremony, so I didn't need to put too much effort into my outfit for a wedding guest look.

Wedding guest bag sizes, starting with putting in the congratulatory money envelopes.

When looking at bags in photos, smaller ones definitely look prettier. However, the items you carry on a wedding day are different from when you go to a cafe on a daily basis. So, when checking the detailed dimensions of a bag, I would start by checking for a width of around 20cm. However, since envelope sizes vary by product, it is more important to check if the actual congratulatory money envelope fits all the way to the bottom without folding, rather than relying solely on the numbers.

I prefer a bag where I can put the phone in lying down or slide it to the side, rather than one where I have to stand it upright just to barely fit it.

Try putting a card wallet, a lip balm, and a small power bank in here. If everything fits but the sides are bulging and the zipper closes with difficulty, it is actually too small.

I found that you don't need to wear overly flashy clothes with a bag like this. Wearing a thin ivory knit sweater under a brown single-breasted jacket and low-slung navy straight-leg slacks creates a sufficiently neat look for an autumn wedding. As for the bag, carrying a taupe horizontal shoulder bag instead of black prevents the outfit from looking too heavy even against the brown jacket.

For shoes, something like dark brown loafers with toes that aren't too pointed. If you consider checking in, eating, and moving around, this is the more realistic option.

For October jacket wedding guest looks, the shoulder bag strap length also changes.

A bag that fit well over a thin dress in the summer can suddenly become uncomfortable over a jacket in October. As the shoulder area becomes thicker, the short strap sticks to your armpit, and you have to lift your arm awkwardly just to take your phone out of the bag.

You can check this right at home. Put on the jacket you’ll wear to the wedding, try on the bag, let your arms hang naturally, and open it. It is much more convenient if you can open the zipper or flap without having to take the bag off your shoulder.

For a slightly more formal ceremony, wearing a warm gray short jacket over a deep wine midi dress is a good option. Pairing this with a black square shoulder bag with an adjustable strap, rather than a heavily decorated chain bag, will highlight the colors of the outfit while keeping the bag understated.

Also, you don't need to go out of your way to match the colors of your bag and shoes like a set. If you are carrying a black bag, wearing dark brown 3cm slingbacks is sufficient. At the reception desk, you might end up with an envelope in one hand and a phone or meal ticket in the other. I find it a bit cumbersome to have to carry a clutch bag in my hand in such situations. A bag that stays on my shoulder is much more comfortable.

Women's shoulder bags for wedding guests to carry to a cafe after the ceremony should have minimal embellishments.

Around 4 PM, after the wedding is over, the criteria for choosing the bag become apparent once again. If I go to a cafe with friends and the bag with the sparkling chains and heavy embellishments stands out too much like a wedding outfit, I might not reach for it again next time. Since October is filled with weekend plans and autumn outings in addition to weddings, it feels even more wasteful to buy a bag that will only be used once and put away.

So, for the third outfit, I’m going to keep it a bit light. Just a thin soft gray knit top paired with deep olive semi-wide pants and a small dark brown leather shoulder bag. For the wedding, add a touch of neatness with earrings and low slingbacks, and after the ceremony, you can go straight to a cafe without standing out.

Next week, you could even wear denim and suede loafers with the same bag. With this setup, it hardly feels like you bought a separate guest bag. In the end, checking at the entrance was surprisingly simple. First, put the actual congratulatory envelopes inside, and pack your phone and power bank. Check to make sure the bag maintains its shape. Finally, put on a jacket and try it on your shoulder.

If you find three things convenient, you can just take those with you.

This time, it is less about giving up on a small bag and more about giving up on a bag that is inconveniently small. After all, it’s not a day where I just take a single photo and that’s it.
