When a wedding date is set, I should be congratulating them first, but sometimes my wardrobe is the first thing that comes to mind. What should I wear again...? I don't want to look too plain at the wedding venue, but I also don't want to be the only guest who looks obviously like one when I step outside after the ceremony.

It is especially tricky right now, transitioning from September clothes to October clothes. I still want to dress lightly during the day, but if I consider morning or evening appointments, I end up packing a light jacket. If I wear a jacket, it adds another item to carry, but if I buy a new dress, the one I bought last year is still sitting in the closet...

I don't know why I end up buying so many clothes for other people's weddings when I'm not even married. Choosing outfits for a trip is fun for even two hours, but getting wedding guest looks starts to get annoying after just 20 minutes. Moreover, October has many weekends where you go to a wedding, visit a cafe, go on an autumn outing, or have dinner plans, so it feels like a waste to choose clothes based on just one venue.

So this time, I looked at it completely differently. Something that looks just like my own clothes even the moment I step out of the wedding hall. Once I took out the cardigan first, the answer came surprisingly quickly.

Are you planning to buy another dress? I still have last year's in my closet.

At first, I started by searching for dresses, too. A black midi dress with a short jacket is a safe bet. But just as I was about to add it to my cart, I thought, "Wait... don't I have something similar?" I opened my closet, and sure enough, I had it. There was even one that I hadn't worn much since last year's wedding.

At that moment, my desire to buy a new dress faded a bit. Instead, I took out a cream-colored round-neck cardigan and paired it with a charcoal-brown midi skirt. Here, a cardigan that is too long looks a bit awkward. The length falls short below the waist, so it doesn't obscure the skirt's waistline, making the overall proportions look much neater. Also, leaving the top slightly open instead of buttoning it all the way up prevents the neck area from feeling constricted.

If it were me, I wouldn't wear 6cm pumps with this. Now, it's more important that your feet don't hurt when walking with friends after the ceremony than to look pretty for a moment while taking photos. A deep burgundy 3cm slingback would add a color tone somewhere between cream and charcoal and look sufficiently neat.

I'm going for a more practical approach with the bag. A mini bag that's gone just by putting a phone in? It's pretty, but I'll pass. A small brown shoulder bag that fits a card wallet and a power bank is all I need. I can just spend the leftover money on my trip!

If the cream cardigan is too plain, try changing the bottom instead of the top.

Wearing a cream cardigan with a flared skirt certainly creates a soft and feminine vibe. However, you might look in the mirror and think, "Hmm... this looks a little different from me." On days like that, I don't force myself to add accessories. It is actually faster to just switch the bottoms to charcoal semi-wide slacks.

The cardigan remains the same, but the vibe changes quite a bit. Since the lines fall more straight than a skirt, it feels less demure, and if you choose charcoal instead of black slacks, the contrast with the cream-colored top is less intense, making it easy to pair with an autumn outfit.

A small silver earring here. As for shoes, I think I wouldn't touch it any further if it were just black or dark brown slingbacks.

Ah, I was wondering if I should add a necklace here, but I'll just leave it out. The cardigan buttons are already visible at the front, so if I keep adding decorations, it starts to get a bit too cluttered.

And there is a separate, real reason why I like this slacks combination. On Mondays, I can just switch the slingbacks to loafers and go to work. The fact that this isn't an outfit I wear just once for a wedding is a big deal.

It would be a bit awkward if I went to a cafe after the ceremony and was the only one who still looked like a guest.

To be honest, I'm more concerned about what comes after the wedding than the venue itself. On weekends like these, when autumn weddings are taking place one after another, instead of just attending a ceremony and returning straight home, there are days when the day extends to going to a cafe with a long-lost friend or making dinner plans. Since autumn festivals and outings also overlap in October, wearing casual clothes is more comfortable when stepping out in the afternoon.

Then there are times when an outfit that looked perfectly fine in the wedding hall suddenly looks excessive the moment you sit down in a cafe.

A cardigan and slacks are comfortable in times like this. At a wedding, the slingbacks and small earrings add a bit of flair, but once you step outside, it just looks like a well-dressed autumn outfit.

I would like to include at least one deep burgundy shoulder bag. A cream cardigan and charcoal slacks alone might look a bit plain, but if an autumn color comes in from the bag, that’s exactly where the eye stops.

But matching the shoes in burgundy too? Hmm... I wouldn't do that. If I've added color to the bag, I prefer to keep the shoes quiet and go with black or dark brown. If I have a fall outing planned for next weekend, I could wear dark blue semi-wide denim instead of slacks with suede loafers. That way, even though it's the same cardigan, the wedding vibe almost completely disappears. Clothes like this last a long time for me.

You might choose long sleeves because they look pretty, but you could end up constantly rolling them up while eating.

When it comes to autumn wedding guest looks, the thickness of the cardigan and the sleeves are things that are surprisingly easy to overlook. In early October like now, it feels chilly when you step out of the house, so a thick knit sweater just looks appealing, but it can feel stuffy when you are out and about during the day or enter a crowded indoor space.

So, rather than very thick knits, I prioritize medium thickness that isn't see-through when worn alone. It's also more convenient to take it off and drape it over my arm when it's hot, and then take it out to wear again when it cools down in the evening.

Sleeves that lightly cover the back of your hand are fine, but you should think twice about them coming down close to your fingers. I had a similar experience when I traveled. A long-sleeved knit looked so pretty in photos, but once I sat down at a restaurant, I took a bite, rolled it up, and it kept slipping down, so I rolled it up again... Ah, it slipped down again!

Because of that memory, I always glance at the sleeves when looking at wedding guest outfits. It might look pretty, but if I have to keep touching it at the banquet hall, that's when my enthusiasm cools down a bit. This is especially true for afternoon weddings. Thin cardigans are easy to take off indoors and take up less space than a jacket when draped over the arms. On the other hand, for formal hotel weddings, a short jacket might be a better fit, so there is no need to insist on a cardigan at all costs.

You have to choose your clothes based on the place... It can't be helped.

Can I take this on my autumn trip next week too? I'm looking at it one more time here.

Now that I've finished getting my wedding outfit ready, I find myself thinking about a trip in a completely different way. Can I take this cardigan on my next trip too?

October is especially a time when plans to go see the autumn foliage or visit festivals start popping up one after another, so I find myself reaching even less for clothes that will be gone just for a single wedding. My schedule changes every weekend, and I can't exactly buy new clothes every time... My bank account gives in first.

You can go to a wedding with a cream cardigan, charcoal midi skirt, and slingbacks, and for the next occasion, simply swap the skirt for cream pants and wear brown suede loafers. If you want to dress a bit more comfortably, try dark wash denim with sneakers. I actually think I would reach for this one more often.

It’s also good to pack in a bag for a fall trip. A cardigan that you can throw on in the morning, take off if it gets too hot during the day, and put back on around sunset is very versatile. On the other hand, I’m a bit hesitant now about wearing an outfit that looks perfect only for a wedding. I already have a few dresses like that.

It is perfectly fine.

It’s a problem that it’s too perfect... because I don’t wear it!

So, for a wedding this fall, I’d start by putting a cream or oatmeal cardigan at the front of my closet. If I want to wear a skirt, pair it with a charcoal brown midi skirt and low slingbacks; if I want to keep things a bit more casual, go with semi-wide slacks. Just changing the bag to a deep burgundy is enough to completely change the vibe.

And after the ceremony, I'll go straight to a cafe. If I pick up that cardigan again when packing for my next trip? Then I'll have made a good purchase. As for the new guest dress... I'll remove it from the cart for now.
