I stopped wearing it because I thought it was out of style, but it's back... An autumn outfit transformed by just one cardigan
I used to wear cardigans quite often a few years ago, but at some point, I completely stopped wearing them. It’s not that I dislike them, but whenever I see a basic cardigan with a long row of buttons, it feels like something I used to wear a lot. And since I have newly bought knits and sweatshirts, I just don't see any reason to take one out. I don't know how many times I’ve briefly considered throwing one away while organizing my closet, only to shove it back inside because it was in perfectly good condition.
However, as the morning air changed dramatically in October, that cardigan caught my eye again. The jacket I had originally taken out to wear looked a bit stuffy to wear in the morning, but I felt like I would regret it the moment I opened the front door if I went out wearing only a short-sleeved shirt... After standing in front of the closet for a while, I took out a deep brown cardigan from the back.

I didn't wear it because I thought it was unfashionable, but when I looked in the mirror, oh, it looks a bit different from before.
I buttoned up a cardigan I hadn't worn before, and the vibe changed completely.
In the past, whenever I wore a cardigan, I would put on a white T-shirt underneath and leave almost all the front buttons unbuttoned. Come to think of it, I wore it that way for years, so I guess it’s no wonder that the old look comes to mind whenever I take the clothes out again. This time, I buttoned it up so the T-shirt wouldn't be visible and left the top button slightly unbuttoned, wearing it just like a round-neck knit sweater.
I wore dark blue semi-wide denim jeans and dark brown loafers on the bottom, and the vibe changed quite a bit. I have many memories of wearing long cardigans with tight jeans in the past, but now that the pant legs are wider and the cardigan ends short below the waist, the overall proportions look much lighter.
I rolled up my sleeves and looked in the mirror again, but there was no reason to change into other clothes. It wasn't like I bought new clothes, but I felt like I had unnecessarily found something good this morning, which even lifted my spirits a bit.
I'm glad I didn't throw this away when organizing the closet.

The cardigan I wore with jeans surprisingly went well with my work slacks as well.
I thought it would go back into the closet for a while after wearing it once, but a few days later, while getting ready for work, I picked up that cardigan again. That day, I wore charcoal semi-wide slacks instead of dark blue denim, and at first, I briefly considered changing into a shirt, wondering if it might look too demure. However, after putting on my shoes and looking in the entryway mirror, I realized it wasn't really necessary to change.
It was calmer than the day I wore denim, but it wasn't as stiff as a work outfit consisting of a shirt and jacket. The air outside was cool in the morning, so I walked to the station wearing a cardigan; however, it got hot quickly once I got on the subway, so I took it off and draped it over my arm. I put it back on when I arrived at the office and felt the air conditioning.
On days like this, while having a pretty outfit is important, I actually prefer not having to worry about it all day long. My back didn't feel uncomfortable while sitting, and the sleeves didn't bother me, so by the time I went out for lunch, I hadn't even given much thought to what I had worn that morning. However, when I was choosing my clothes the next day, it caught my eye again. I wondered if it was really an outfit I hadn't worn in years.
The reason I ended up changing into cream pants after coveting a long skirt
I took out a charcoal brown long skirt on Saturday, thinking I might dress a little differently from the weekdays. When I looked at it on the bed alongside a cardigan, the colors matched well and it had an autumnal vibe, so I thought it would be fine. However, when I actually put it on and stood in front of the mirror, the atmosphere was a bit different from what I had envisioned.

With the cardigan being understated and the skirt long and calm, I suddenly felt too demure. Adding the loafers to the mix, I felt less like someone going to a cafe and more like someone going to greet someone. After looking around in the mirror a few times, I eventually took the skirt off again and tossed it onto the bed.
Instead, I wore cream-colored straight pants and switched my shoes to brown suede sneakers. The cardigan I was wearing on top remained the same, but since only the bottom part was lighter, it looked much more comfortable, and only then did I feel like I could just go out. I went to a cafe and wandered around for quite a while, even visiting a bookstore, and this look actually matched my usual autumn clothes better. I shouldn't have tried to create every possible combination just because I was wearing the cardigan again. I can always take out the long skirt on a day when I wear a different knit.
Wearing it in the morning and taking it off in the afternoon... The reason I look for cardigans again in October
I wore it comfortably in the morning, but the situation changed again in the afternoon. After leaving the cafe and walking for a while in the sunlight, I felt a subtle warmth rising in my back, so I eventually took off my cardigan and draped it over my arm. In the morning, I thought I would have been cold without it, but now that a few hours have passed and I’m carrying it around, dressing for October is really tricky.
Still, it wasn't as burdensome to carry around as a thick jacket. I took it off inside the bookstore and put it back on when the wind blew outside, and as the sun began to set, I ended up wearing it properly this time. Come to think of it, I think the reason I used to wear cardigans often wasn't because they were particularly stylish, but simply because they were comfortable in this kind of ambiguous weather.
I came home, changed my clothes, and was about to put the cardigan back in its original place in the closet when I paused for a moment. I had worn it with denim, slacks, and even cream pants over the weekend in the past few days, so there was no reason to hide it in the back again. So, I moved it and hung it next to the shirts I wear often.

It wasn't that the cardigan I thought was out of style suddenly became a new piece of clothing. Over the past few years, the fit of my pants and shoes have changed, and I no longer feel that I have to wear a cardigan exactly as I used to.
I had it shoved behind the closet for years, but this autumn it's in the front. I think I'll find it a bit funny myself if I pick it up again tomorrow morning.
