They say floral patterns can look old-fashioned if worn incorrectly, but what is this... It looks completely different when Lee Sung-kyung wears it as a black cardigan.

I find myself pausing for no reason in front of floral patterns. The clothes look pretty on their own, but I worry that I might suddenly look old when I actually wear them. So I used to think that the smaller the flowers, the better, and that there shouldn't be too many colors, but seeing Lee Sung-kyung's outfit, I realized I was wrong from the start.

One moment, small flowers were plastered all over black, and the next, red flowers were grown to the size of a face. However, in between, there are also brown and blue colors with not a single flower. This photo is more interesting to look at for the way colors are used than for the floral patterns.

I thought wearing brown like this would feel stifling, but the addition of blue changes everything. I layered a short vest in the same shade under the jacket and carried the color line down to the pants, casually draping a vivid blue knit sweater over my shoulders. Honestly, without this blue, I think it would have ended up looking like a rather serious outfit. However, with the bright color coming close to my face, the clothes suddenly look youthful. It made me realize, "Ah, this is exactly when you're supposed to use color."

Also, I liked the length of the inner vest. Even when I take off the jacket, it doesn't just leave a plain suit vest underneath; it ends short just above the waist, so it doesn't feel stuffy even though the pants are brown as well. If you feel it's a bit too bold to wear as is to the office, I think you could just add one more layer underneath. Conversely, for autumn outings or travel, there doesn't seem to be any reason to change it to something more modest.

Above all, I feel a bit embarrassed about my habit of pairing brown with beige or cream first. Lee Sung-kyung really went all out with the blue. Many people will likely be pulling out their brown jackets again in October, but there is no need to strictly match similar colors. It is a combination that makes me want to look for the blue knit sweaters I already have at home rather than buying new clothes.

There are so many flowers, but why doesn't it feel overwhelming… The answer was on the black side.

For the second one, I started by looking at the black Dolce & Gabbana cardigan. There are small flowers attached to the sleeves, and the pants underneath are also covered in tiny blossoms. If you just count the number of flowers, it should be much more flashy than the first one, but it doesn't actually feel that way.

Since the cardigan itself is black and the pants are also black, from a distance, the dark silhouette is what catches your eye first. You have to get close to see the flowers on the sleeves one by one.

I particularly like the sleeves. I feel like the flowers will peek out when I hold a coffee cup or use my phone, rather than when I'm just standing still. I'm more curious about details like this than clothes that advertise they're wearing a floral pattern all day long.

A while ago, an acquaintance of mine bought a floral skirt and spent a long time agonizing over what to wear with it. They tried on white and beige, but eventually said something felt off. If I were to show them this photo now, I’d tell them to try on black. Maybe there was no need to go through such a headache trying to match the top to every single flower color.

The cardigan is on the shorter side, so it doesn't drape over the pants. Thanks to this, the floral pattern starts right below the waist. I'm actually more curious to see the moment when the flowers on the sleeves and the bottom flowers appear together when you move, rather than just looking at the photos.

You grew the flower as big as your face… Now that you’ve come this far, I see you had no intention of dressing modestly.

I chuckled a little as soon as I saw the last one. The flower, which was small in the front, suddenly grew huge. A large red flower sits atop a black top, paired with striped wide-leg pants and a red bag in the hand. Usually, if the top is this bold, you'd expect the bottom to be quiet. But they even added stripes. Far from taking something away, they essentially added something more.

If I were to tell you to wear it exactly as it is, I think I would be speechless for a moment. Still, it is the most fun to look at out of the three looks. Your eyes keep moving because you look at the red flowers, then go down to see the stripes, and come back up to find red on the bag as well.

Above all, not all floral patterns are the same. With the second one, you have to get close to see the flowers, while with the last, you can see the flowers first even from a distance. One reveals them subtly, while the other displays them openly.

If I were to look at the three again, I think I would start with the second one, the black cardigan. The reason is the sleeves, not the floral pattern. A garment where small flowers follow your hands every time you move—I really want to see that in person. This time, rather than just deciding to copy the look, that detail is what lingers in my memory the longest.
