She went to college with Jeon Ji-hyun. Twenty years later, their fashion took completely different paths.

45-year-old actress stays bold with color while her classmate went minimal — here's why they diverged so completely.

The short version
  • College classmate of Jeon Ji-hyun but she took the opposite fashion path — bold colors and showing off leg-length
  • At 45, her strategy is always short hemlines, two-color palettes, and one playful accent
  • She's maintained the 'Barbie' nickname through wardrobe choices designed specifically to flatter 112cm legs

Actress Han Chae-young is a story in contrasts. Born in Incheon, raised in Daegu, she moved to Chicago in middle school. Then on a trip back to Korea she was spotted in a cafe on Insadong and got discovered. She's a 2000 graduate of Dongguk University's Film & Theater program, class year same as two other legends: Jeon Ji-hyun and So-yeon Soh. The three of them showed up on Dolsing Foreman where Kim Ho-young, also from the same program, called the three a school legend.

She won a Mattel Barbie look-alike contest, which is why her nickname is literally 'Barbie.' In 2005 she did Quicksand Spring with 30 percent ratings and won Best Dressed. She married a four-years-older Korean-American businessman in 2007, had a son in 2013, and went on variety in 2017 doing Slam Dunk with her sisters singing 'Cool Tomato' and somehow got the nickname 'Ketchup Unni' anyway. From February to May this year she was a judge on MBN's No-Name Legend.

45 years old now, born in 1980, profile says 172cm but she's said she's actually 168, and her legs are 112cm long. The three Dongguk classmates who started in the same classroom ended up with completely different public images 20 years later — and Chae-young went the most colorful and feminine direction of them all. Here's why.

① Emerald Green Chiffon Mini Dress, Theme Park

She went to college with Jeon Ji-hyun. Twenty years later, their fashion took completely different paths.

First is from a theme park abroad. Emerald green chiffon mini dress with sleeves that puff wide and waist ruching that makes top voluminous, bottom short. When someone with 112cm leg-length wears a mini, it's basically all legs from there down. The outfit is emerald-and-pink-bag complementary colors, bold contrast without flinching. That's the opposite direction from the actresses doing muted neutral-only dressing.

② Black Long Puffer with Character Sweatshirt, Airport

Second is at the airport with luggage. Black long padded coat with fur hood, gray sweatshirt with a big rabbit character printed huge across the chest, black leggings, black sneakers. Hair is wavy and long, sunglasses on. This is the comfort outfit but the sweatshirt print is enormous and funny — it's the 'Ketchup Unni' vibe bleeding through. Puffer is left open so the print shows fully, and that's the detail. Even relaxed, she's adding one element of play.

③ Baby Pink Crop Tweed Jacket with Big Black Ribbon, Coffee Cart

She went to college with Jeon Ji-hyun. Twenty years later, their fashion took completely different paths.

Third is at a film set coffee cart. Baby pink crop tweed jacket with white buttons, black blouse with a big black bow-tie ribbon under it, black skirt below. Tweed can read matronly fast, but two-color restriction (pink and black only) and the ribbon pulling the eye down past the face keeps it youthful. Hair is chin-length bob, lips are pink. The 'Barbie' nickname lives in this outfit — femininity that reads intentional but not age-inappropriate at 45 because the palette is just two colors.

④ Camel Oversized Trench, Camel Mini Skirt, Ivory Long Boots, Wood Wall

Fourth is a photo-shoot feeling frame against wood paneling. Camel oversized trench left open, black camisole under, same-tone camel mini skirt, ivory long boots. Jacket and skirt are the same color so they read as one vertical line, making everything longer. Boots are light which makes legs keep extending. Gold drop earrings, blue nails. At 168cm actual height, here she reads as 172 — all the magic is vertical lines plus bright boots at the bottom keeping the leg-line going. Same principle as ① but inverted: where ① is short frame + mini = all legs, ④ is more average frame + long lines = tower.

The formula is three rules: always show leg-length (short hemlines), use color boldly but keep to two colors maximum, add one playful element even to formal wear. Her classmate Jeon Ji-hyun went high-fashion minimal-reserved. Chae-young protected the 'Barbie' nickname by building clothes around proportion and bold color. Try the ④ monochrome-tall-lines trick this fall — matching top and bottom color, light boots at the end, that's all you need.
